Pizza Toppings and Calzone Fillings

There are tons of possible pizza toppings / calzone fillings and even more combinations. Here are some ideas for delicious vegetarian and vegan pizzas and calzones.

Toppings / Fillings

  • Artichoke hearts
  • Asparagus tips (steamed)
  • Bell peppers (fresh or roasted)
  • Broccoli
  • Capers
  • Cheese (mozzarella, swiss, cheddar, goat, gruyère, blue, ricotta...)
  • Eggplant (grilled, sautéed, or puréed, as in eggplant caviar or caponata)
  • Fennel (roasted)
  • Garlic (raw or roasted)
  • Herbs (basil leaves, oregano, rosemary...)
  • Hot peppers
  • Mushrooms
  • Nuts (walnuts, pine nuts, slivered almonds...)
  • Olives
  • Onions (raw or caramelized)
  • Red onion confit
  • Salsa
  • Steamed spinach
  • Tapenade
  • Tomatoes (fresh or sun-dried)
  • Tomato sauce
  • Zucchini (sautéed)

My favorite combinations

Pizza Margherita

  • 1 c tomato sauce
  • 6 oz fresh mozzarella
  • 10 fresh basil leaves, sliced
  • 2 T olive oil drizzled over the top

Sun-Dried Tomato Pizza

  • 1-1½ c tomato sauce
  • 1-2 c mild cheese (mozzarella, edam, ricotta)
  • 1 med red onion, thinly sliced
  • 8-10 oil-packed sun-dried tomatoes, drained and sliced
  • 2 T olive oil drizzled over the top

Four Cheese Pizza

  • 1½ c tomato sauce
  • ½-1 c each of four cheeses (cheddar, mozz, gouda, monterey jack, blue, etc.)
  • 1 med red onion, sliced
