Vegetarian Asian Recipes
Tofu, originally from China, and tempeh, originally from Indonesia, are very
common in Asian cuisine. In addition, meat other than fish is relatively
uncommon, so there are all kinds of vegetarian recipes in Asian cuisine.
Here are just a few of my favorites.
Almond Cookies
Almond cookies
from China (and some Chinese restaurants) are light and crispy.
Chop Suey
Chop suey, despite its Chinese name, is actually an American recipe,
normally made with a mix of meat, vegetables, and bean sprouts. This
vegan version uses tofu, bok choy, and spinach, to great effect.
Chow Mein
Mock chicken chow mein (made with TVP) doesn't take long to prepare,
but it does require quite a bit of cooking.
Fried Rice Fried rice is an easy, versatile, and quick vegetarian recipe. In fact, the hardest part is remembering to make the rice at least several hours beforehand, so that it has time to chill.
Fried Tempeh
Tempeh, a cake of fermented soybeans, is much tastier than it sounds. Fried
tempeh is golden brown and goes well with peanut and barbecue sauce. Fried Tofu Fried tofu is easy to make and has a nice chewy/crunchy texture.
Hot and Sour Soup I know a number of people who crave hot and sour soup when they're sick.
Maki Rolls
Maki rolls are a vegetarian relative of sushi. This recipe calls for cucumber
and avocado, but you can experiment with other ingredients as well.
Miso Soup This is a very simple but richly-flavored soup.
Miso Soup with Pumpkin and
Onion
Miso soup, or miso shiru, is a typical Japanese soup that comes in
many varieties. This one is spiced up with pumpkin, onion, and optional curry
powder.
Oden - Japanese Winter Stew
A
hearty winter stew for vegetarians.
Pad Thai

Sesame Noodle Salad
Buckwheat noodles with various vegetables and sesame oil make a
delicious, protein-packed Asian noodle salad.
Swiss Chard with Sesame
Seeds
This simple swiss chard salad recipe, native to both Japan and
Korea, is both nutritious and delicious.
Thai Tofu Curry
Delicately sweet
and spicy, this is a delicious Massaman-inspired curry made with potatoes
and pineapple.
