Sambar Powder

Sambar powder is an essential ingredient for sambar and is very easy to make.

Yield about 1 cup

Ingredients
  • ½ c coriander powder
  • 1 T hot red chile powder
  • 1½ t cumin
  • 1½ t ground black pepper
  • 1½ t fenugreek powder
  • 2 t turmeric
  • ½-1 t cinnamon
Directions Mix all ingredients together in a bowl.

Use ¼ c sambar powder to make sambar, and then store the leftover powder in a jar in the refrigerator.
Notes South Indians nearly always make their own sambar powder, but if you prefer, you can buy it pre-made in an Indian grocery. 777 is a good brand.
