Oatmeal

Oatmeal is one of the great breakfasts – not only is it packed with nutrients, it’s also easy to cook and can be customized to your heart’s content.

Yield 2 servings
Time rolled oats: 6 to 8 minutes
steel-cut oats: 15-20 minutes
Tools
  • medium saucepan with lid
  • wooden spoon
Ingredients Rolled oats oatmeal

  • ¾ c rolled oats
  • 1½ c milk or water
  • ¼ t salt

Steel-cut / Celtic oatmeal

  • ½ c steel-cut oats
  • 2 c milk or water
  • ¼ t salt
Directions Combine oats, milk or water, and salt in the saucepan and bring to a boil. Stir, cover, and reduce heat to a simmer (for rolled oats) or a medium boil (steel-cut oats) and cook until tender.
Notes Milk can burn if the heat is too high, so keep an eye on the oatmeal, especially if using steel-cut oats. Or you can use a double boiler, though the oats will take longer to cook.
