Savory French Toast Sticks

Start your day with a new twist on a classic breakfast food.

Yield: 4-8 servings

  • heavy frying pan
  • deep-frying thermometer
  • large plate
  • paper towels
  • shallow dish
  • whisk
  • heat proof tongs

Ingredients

  • ¾ c or so oil for frying
  • 1 c flour
  • 1 T dried herbs
  • 1 t garlic powder
  • 1 t onion powder
  • ½ t salt
  • ¼ t baking powder
  • ¼ t baking soda
  • 1 c non-dairy milk
  • ½ c fresh herbs (such as basil, thyme, or parsley)
  • stale bread cut into sticks (4 to 6 inches long and about one inch thick and wide)
  • a few t nutritional yeast (optional)
  • salt

Directions

Add oil to pan (¼ inch deep) and heat to 350F (180C).

Line the plate with paper towels and set next to the frying pan.

Combine dry ingredients in the bowl, then slowly whisk in milk until smooth. Stir in fresh herbs.

Dip a piece of bread into the batter and turn to coat evenly. Pick up with the tongs and carefully place in the oil.

Fry 5-10 seconds until golden brown. Flip and fry the other side, then transfer to plate.

Repeat with remaining sticks.

Sprinkle with nutritional yeast and/or salt, and serve with dipping sauces.
