Barbecue Sauce

Easy recipe for a tangy barbecue sauce. Barbecue sauce
Yield about 1½ cups
Time 40 minutes
Tools
  • Wok or large saucepan
  • Wooden spoon
Ingredients
  • 2 T sesame oil
  • ½ c onion, diced
  • ½ c tomato sauce or ketchup
  • ¼ c balsamic vinegar
  • 3 T Dijon mustard
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 T soy sauce
  • 2 t molasses or maple syrup
  • 1 t smoked salt
  • ½ t pepper
Directions Heat the oil over medium heat, add onions, and sauté until golden brown, about 5 minutes.

Stir in remaining ingredients and simmer, stirring frequently, for 30 minutes. Add a bit of water as needed to keep it from getting too thick.

Notes The sauce will develop more flavor if you leave it in the fridge for a few days, but it’s terrific when freshly made, too.

This barbecue sauce is excellent over fried tofu and fried tempeh.

Also try Fruity BBQ sauce.
